Wheel pants

Aviation WheelWhen able

Wheel Pants The large fairings used to streamline the wheels of an aircraft that has non-retracting, or "fixed" landing gear (so-called because it's "fixed" in place).

Mud, slush and dirt can build up in wheel pants, elevator hinges, block brake operation and when frozen can hinder proper operation of the aircraft or endanger it. Putting the aircraft in a hanger during winter time is the best protection.

Endcaps on control surfaces and wings, the tail cone, the upper and lower cowls and wheel pants were all made from fiberglass. Even more radical, the landing gear springs were massive fiberglass laminations inside steel aeroshells.

--Remove wheel pants
Do not recycle wet landing gear
Refill tanks immediately after landing
Refuel only when aircraft is level
Check quality of fuel
Imitation chamois will not filter water from fuel
Use only aviation approved filters ...

hard by the Minnesota border, I picked up a dozen or more Scouts and Super Decathlons, ferrying them to the West Coast, and on those airplanes without wheel pants, it was always fun to look for interesting, unpaved places to land.
