alive: a ball is alive when it is released by a shooter or thrower, or legally tapped by a jumper during a jump ball; the game clock starts only when the ball becomes alive; compare with live.
Dribble alive
Stance: In playing a man on the perimeter who's dribble is still alive, keep the butt low, be on balance, and have a hand up and over the ball.
The ball becomes alive and active when:
- A player involved in the jump-ball touches the ball
- The official gives the ball to a player who is to take the free throw
- From a throw-in, the ball touches a player who is in play ...
Keep the Dribble Alive
The most common mistake of inexperienced basketball players is "giving up their dribble". Once this happens, the defense is taught to collapse on you, trap you, and feed on this deadly mistake.
While the ball is alive, an offensive player cannot remain for more than three seconds in that part of the free-throw lane between the endline, the free-throw line, and the free-throw lane lines.
DEAD BALL, LIVE BALL, BALL IS ALIVE
After the ball has been dead, it is put into play by a jump ball, throw-in, or a free throw attempt. The game clock does not start until the ball is legally touched on the court by a player.

Alive: ball is up for grabs when set in motion by a shooter and/or during a jump ball.
Alley Oop: occurs as the ball is high near the basket, the player grabs and scores in one smooth move.
O1 keeps his dribble alive at the elbow-extended-up position from which we start the offense.
O2 executes a "Slash-and-Seal" at "X"
O2 cuts back to the juncture of the 3-point and foul-line-extended to receive pass.
You can do it with 2 balls in each group and holding one ball dribbled (alive) to control the pass out of the dribble.
Call reverse and we turn the passing from 1,2,3 to 3,2,1
Use more players than 3 or mix up the groups 2 of 3 and 2 of 4 players.
Live
When a ball is shot or passed, or tapped in a jump ball, the ball is said to be alive. The game clock doesnt start until the ball is alive. See Live Ball.

Another common situation is where the initial receiver tries to move upcourt and gets closed off, but keeps the dribble alive. He then attempts to drive around Blue 2 and progress up the middle of the floor.
Avoid "trap areas"... the corners. Don't dribble into one of the trap areas (see below)... back away but keep your dribble alive, or pass off.
As soon as a ball is given to a free-throw shooter or a thrower on a throw-in, it is live, but the game clock does not restart until the ball is alive.
