Alley-oop: A pass that is received in mid-air and dunked or laid-up before the player touches the ground.
Assist: A pass that, once received, is immediately shot and scored. Awarded to the player who passes the ball.

 


Alley-Oop Pass - A pass thrown with a high arc near the basket so a teammate can make a leaping catch and score in a single motion.

Alley-oop: One of basketball's most popular plays is when one player makes a pass to another player who catches the ball and scores a basket while in the mid-air.

Alley-oops -When a player catches a basketball from a team mate in the air and DUNKS or LAYS IN the ball before he lands. A more commonly used basketball phrase.

Alley-oop: This is a collective move. A pass thrown by a player to another player who is running toward the basket. The second player jumps and catches the ball in midair, and dunks it or lays it in before landing.

Note: The alley-oop play, once illegal in FIBA, was legalised in 1994.
NBA
An imaginary cylinder exists that has the basket as its base. Touching the ball while any part of it is in this cylinder (and still has a chance to go in) is a violation.

Offensive player 2 is being guarded by defender #2. Player 2 is in the low-post position facing his teammate 1. His defender, facing player 2 and his arms up cannot see the ball.

Nelson alley-ooped the basketball as Howard jumped from just inside the foul line, caught the ball, and threw it through the rim. This dunk is considered controversial, as his hand was not over as well as on a vertical plane to the rim.

This guideline shall apply to any field goal attempted by a player after he receives an inbounds pass, OTHER THAN what will be called, for this purpose, a "tip-in" or "alley-oop.

O4 cuts around the screen for the possible lob ("alley-oop") pass from O1. After screening, O3 pops out to the point. When running this last option, O5 moves to the short corner, which will take the X5 defender outside.

Liven up this drill by allowing an alley-oop pass to the
middle man instead of a layup.
Tips
Stress good passes and quick shots by the outside players receiving passes.
