Assistant Coach Pitfalls
It is vitally important to quickly define the role of the assistant coach. I have seen a dozen cases where a new face shows up at practice and gets introduced as the new assistant.

 


An assist is the principal pass that contributes directly to a field goal, according to the 2005 edition of the NCAA Basketball Statisticians' Manual. The pass must be a major part of the play. Only one assist may be awarded for each field goal.

Being an assistant is a lot of fun... enjoy and appreciate the privilege.

Assists - the last pass to a teammate that leads directly to a field goal; the scorer must move immediately toward the basket for the passer to be credited with an assist; only one assist can be credited per field goal.

You will often see in a players stats a certain number of assists. These are passes that subsequently result in a goal being scored

Assist: This is when a player passes the ball to one of his/her teammates and the teammate scores. The player who passed the ball is credited with an assist.

Assist: A pass that, once received, is immediately shot and scored. Awarded to the player who passes the ball.
Blocked shot: A shot that a defender prevents from scoring by deflecting the ball.

Backdoor: When a player quickly cuts behind his player towards the basket to receive a pass and make a shot.
Baseline: The out of bounds line at each end of the court under each basket.

Assists
Great point guards seldom turn the ball over due to pressure, and when they deliver a pass to a teammate it is to a point closest to the best position from which their teammate can score. Not occasionally, but virtually every single time.

The pass to a teammate which leads immediately to a basket. To qualify as an assist, the scorer must head directly toward the goal after receiving the pass. Each score can only have one assist credited to it.

Usually the tallest player on the team who hovers near the opposing team's basket on offence. Waits to receive the ball passed from a teammate.

Biggest scoring run: Biggest margin of consecutive points scored by a team without any points from opponent.

Let the assistant or assistants talk to the teams encouraging them and you referee.
Also, tell to players to communicate and recognize when someone makes a great pass by pointing and saying, ‘nice pass'.

Nike Basketball runs a sponsorship program that provides financial assistance to teams that fulfill certain criteria. Although it can be tough to get sponsorship from Nike, owing to the high levels of competition, it is possible.
