Back about 1959, Pete Newell used the backdoor trap. Later, Ed Jucker of Cincinnati fame refined it by swinging the pattern from side to side.

BACKDOOR ACTION
This option can happen at any location on the floor. Anytime you are being overplayed you should take your man backdoor. Take one step towards the ball then cut hard to the basket.
1 should make a bounce pass to the cutter.

Backdoor: When a player quickly cuts behind his player towards the basket to receive a pass and make a shot.

Backdoor cut when overplayed. When your defender has a foot and hand in the passing lane to deny you from catching the ball, change direction and cut behind the defender toward the basket with your lead hand up.

Also, when a defender overcommits on defense (e.g. tries to steal or deny a pass), they are vulnerable to a backdoor play. Most notably used by good Shooters like Ray Allen of the Boston Celtics or Rip Hamilton of the Detroit Pistons.
