Ball Fake - A fake pass or shot.
Ball Handler - Player controlling the ball; can also mean a player known for skillful handling of the ball.
Ball Side - The side of the court on which the ball is located. Also called the strong side.

 


Ball fake - A motion used to make a defender think you are passing or shooting, when you are really just trying to get them out of position.

Ball fakes
This is a simple, but extremely good way of gaining an advantage over a defender. You execute a ball fake by faking a pass in one direction and in the same motion following with a pass, shot, or dribble in another.

PO4 - Drop step - ball fake to the middle, take a quick step toward the baseline around the defender's foot with one dribble, back into him, jump back into him and shoot.

ball fake A sudden movement by the player with the ball intended to cause the defender to move in one direction, allowing the passer to pass in another direction. Also called "pass fake.

Pass fake: See ball fake.
Passing lane: An imaginary line from the player with the ball to a teammate. If a defender is in the way, the passing lane is closed.
Personal foul: A penalty assessed on a player who commits an illegal action.

Ball Fake: tossing this way, no the other, a deke to trick an opponent.
Ball Handler: refers to basketball player who is either in possession of the ball or moving the ball with skill.

Just toss ball out and step into shot and execute the ball fake. You can put it on the floor or shoot.
You can also have someone toss you the ball and then have them step towards you and play dummy defense where they go for the fake.

In most instances, you will make a ball fake in the opposite direction of your intended shot. After your fake, move your shooting hand under and your non-shooting hand behind and slightly on top of the ball.

Vary shots taken (i.e. shot fake, one dribble right or left for a jump shot while the opposite side uses a shot fake and drives it to the basket.
Stay wide as you run the floor ...

Use V-cuts to get open and ball fakes to avoid telegraphing the pass ("fake a pass to make a pass"). Have your cutters move in straight lines, either toward the ball or toward your basket. Wide arcs and side-to-side cuts favor the defense.

Note:
Players must be taught to use multiple ball fakes to force the zone defenders to shift around, giving up possible openings in the zone, especially in the high post area.

First the player with the ball fakes a shot by thrusting the ball above his head as if to take a shot, then when the defender jumps in an attempt to block the shot, the offensive player steps by him and attempts a clear, unguarded shot.

Holding the ball close to the body at waist height is a terrible place to have the ball. You can't pass fake, ball fake or readily reach around the offense. Neither can you fake a shot with the ball in this position.

Details such as shot fakes above the eyes, "short & sharp" foot-fakes and use of body language in ball fakes are small things, but the "devil is in the detail".

When guarding the dribbler, watch his midsection (waist). He can't go anywhere without it, and you won't fall for foot fakes or ball fakes.

Fake Shot or Fake Pass and Take to the Hoop
This shooting drill incorporates the shot fake or pass fake when driving to the hoop. It works on the all important ball fake to open up the lane.

Kids must learn to handle the pressure and make good decisions with the ball, and not panic when being pressured defensively. Kids must protect the ball and make head fakes and ball fakes to help create passing lanes.
