Ball handler - the player with the ball; usually the point guard at the start of a play.
Bank shot - a shot where the ball is first bounced (or banked) off the backboard at such an angle that it then drops into the basket.

 


Ball Handler - Player controlling the ball; can also mean a player known for skillful handling of the ball.
Ball Side - The side of the court on which the ball is located. Also called the strong side.

Ball handler (1) drives hard to one side of the floor to initiate movement.

Ball Handler Begins to Dribble and/or is Dribbling: Once the offensive player begins to dribble, the defender tries to maintain the same position he maintained before the dribble.

If the ball handler turns his back (a definite no-no) spring the trap
If the ball handler can be guided to the sideline, don't trap until you have the advantage of the out of bounds line.

Have the ball handler dribble towards his defender.
The pick player should set a strong, balanced pick allowing the ball handler to slip past his shoulder into open space.

Your best ball handler will inbound the ball to one of the wings who are set up in a stack in the foul lane under the basket. When player slaps ball and says break the wings split apart and one of them receives the ball.

Traveling: when the ball handler takes too many steps without dribbling; also called walking
Triple double: when a player scores double-digits in 3 categories during one game (points, assists and rebounds -also can be blocks or steals) ...

Good dribblers (or "ball handlers") tend to bounce the ball low to the ground, reducing the travel from the floor to the hand, making it more difficult for the defender to "steal" the ball.

Pick-and-roll: A two-person play in which on offensive player sets a screen (pick) on the ball handler's defender and cuts (rolls) to the basket after the ball handler drives by the screen. Also called a "screen and roll.

Ball Handler: refers to basketball player who is either in possession of the ball or moving the ball with skill.
Bang the Boards: jargon for moving in on that rebound very forcefully.

Myth #2: The defender must give the ball handler a step.
"The player with the ball must expect to be guarded." This is the philosophy of the rules.

Good presses have traps built into them that pressure the ball handlers and cause violations or turnovers that result in fast, easy baskets for the pressers. We will not use these in class because our courts are too short! ...

Ball handlers keep the ball low, protecting it from defenders, and can use either hand to dribble and change directions quickly. Good rebounding is determined by strength, natural instinct, good positioning, and timing.

Simply, you pressure the ball handler, and the other players try to deny a pass to their man. Oftentimes the young inexperienced guards will throw the ball away, or make some other turnover, but just applying a little gentle pressure.

Guards - As the main ball handlers, they are typically the best "dribblers" and passers on the team. They are responsible for bringing the ball up the court and passing it to open players for scoring opportunities.

If an offensive ball handler while in the front court is closely guarded by the defense for five seconds, a violation is called and the defense is awarded the ball.
If two opponents are both firmly holding the ball a "jump ball" is called.

The player who receives a pass from the ball handler.
Referee
One of two or three officials in charge of a game; they are responsible for calling all violations and fouls, levying penalties, and signaling valid field goals.

Guards need to keep constant pressure on the passer or ball handler, forcing them off of their desired path of attack.

Wing areas are designated "Ballside" or Weakside" according to the location of the player with the ball. The wing on the same side as the ball handler is the "Ballside or Strongside" wing.

Has a good jump shot and assists the point guard in passing the ball up the court.

Another tactic is to double-team the opponents' point guard or best ball handler and then deny him a return pass. This often improves the effectiveness of a press because it forces lesser ball-handlers to handle the basketball.

Shooting guard: A tenacious defender with an aptitude for stealing the ball. On offense, serves as the secondary ball handler and sharpshooter. Has the ability to convert shots from three-point range.

You want to be ahead of the ball handler by a half step, so if he turned to go toward the basket, you would be taking a charge.
