A box-and-one defense is usually used against teams with one dominant scoring threat. The idea is to try and shut that player down by forcing them to score against a dedicated man-to-man player, and a supporting zone.

 


Box-and-One
A defense in which four players form a box, with two of them on each side of the free throw line, and the fifth covers an opponent one on one.
Boxing Out ...

This offense can be used against man-to-man, zone or box-and-one defenses.
Play Call: Flex
1 can pass in either direction, preferably towards the strong side.

Box-and-one: A combination defense in which four defenders play zone in a box formation, and the fifth defender guards one player man-to-man.
Box out: See block out.
