Establish Position
To have the feet firmly planted on the floor, occupying an area, before the offensive player arrives in that area. The difference between blocking and charging is whether the defender has established position.

3 will follow the cut by 4 and cut hard from the helpside to the basket. 3 will establish position at the rim looking for the entry pass and easy score.

Purpose:
To condition players to sprint back on defense and establish position to draw the offensive foul, and to teach offensive players to read and react to the defense.
Cross arms to protect chest or groin. Do not lean, push, stick out a knee ... just be there. The screener must establish position, not contact. Some distance between the defender and the screen is fine.
in teaching help and recover, you must teach and drill your help defenders to move their feet quickly to establish position to prevent the dribble move... they must not simply "reach-in" and take a swipe at the ball.
(And no, the offensive player didn't like the call. But it was correct.) Again, there is an exception with an airborne player: if you establish position while the ballhandler is in the air, you must give them their landing spot.
