Free-throw lane

Basketball Free-throwFree-throw line

Free-throw lane - also called the "red zone," a 12-foot wide area extending from the baseline to the free-throw line. Players may not be in this area during a free-throw attempt.

While the ball is alive, an offensive player cannot remain for more than three seconds in that part of the free-throw lane between the endline, the free-throw line, and the free-throw lane lines.

Form a line behind the base line on the right side of the free-throw lane line. Put a shooter at the elbow. The player at the baseline has the ball. At the whistle, the base line player passes the ball to the shooter who squares up for a shot.

The low post area is just to the left or right of the basket on or near the free-throw lane. This is where offensive players (usually the center or a forward) will stand waiting for the ball.

By sending (1) deep to the free-throw lane, we have now gained the advantage of having three players in the zones covered by only two of our opponents.

key The free-throw lane and free-throw circle together (originally, the lane was narrower than the circle's diameter, giving the area the appearance of a skeleton key hole)
[edit] L
lane The free-throw lane.

The Key (or Paint) - The court area made up of the free-throw lanes, the free throw line, and the free-throw circle.
Loose Ball Foul - Called by the referee when a personal foul occurs while the ball is not controlled by either team.

Post - The area on either side of the free-throw lane.
Post Player - The position usually played by the center.
Post Up - Take a position close to, and facing away from, the basket in preparation to receive a pass.

Paint - The area inside the free-throw lane.
Pass - When a player throws the ball to a teammate.
Passing lane - The area between two offensive players where a pass can be made.

They can stand in the blocks along the sides of the free-throw lane or back behind the free-throw shooter. The team whose player is not shooting free throws must be allowed to stand closest to the rim during the shot.

Rebounding missed free-throws
Not boxing out the offensive rebounders along the free-throw lane loses games... see "Boxing Out on a Free-Throw" below.

All defenders mass in assigned areas in and around the free-throw lane and shift as a coordinated unit with each movement of the ball by the offense.
