Full court press defenses try to get turnovers and easy baskets by pressuring, trapping, and harassing the offense. There are several principles and some strategies in beating this pressure.

 


When a full court press is diagrammed on a chart showing the whole court, it's shortcomings are readily apparent. The main weakness is that the defense is spread all over the gym and most of the players are located far from the basket.

Full court press -Right when the offensive team gets the basketball in their BACKCOURT, the other team aggressively goes after them to try and force a TURNOVER instead of waiting at the other end.

Full Court Press: When the defensive team is guarding the offensive team in a very aggressive manner. They are usually double teaming the offensive player who has the ball. The aim of this defensive is to force a turnover and get the ball.

2-2-1 Full Court Press
Principles of the 2-2-1: Used oftentimes when a team is trailing and time is running out on them; it's an aggressive, full-court defense used to pressure the offensive team into committing quick turnovers.

Full court pressure can also be applied after a missed shot ("Green" option) to disrupt the opposition's fast break, give the defense more time to set up, and generate steals.

If you want to become aggresive apply full court pressure using a 1-2-1-1 combined with man-to-man defense instead of your idea of a 1-3-1. Be careful using a 1-3-1, the role of the man up top requires foot speed and the heart of a lion.

The best way to break a full court press is to stay out of the corners at half court - that is the key. You can achieve this by reversing the ball consistently as you head up the court.

Another variation of the 1-3-1 defense is the full court press version.
