A Great Big Man can use the backboard when scoring to reduce the effectiveness of a great shot blocker. Shooting "off the glass" also creates higher percentage shots by increasing your room for error in close quarters.

Using the Glass
When you are shooting the basketball from somewhere between straight away and the corner, the best way to make the shot from that spot is by banking it off the backboard.

Basketball Hour Glass Passing Drill
The basketball hour glass drill is a good passing drill for all ages from the youngest all the way up to high school ages.

I can't seem to get them to use the glass and it's driving me crazy watching them miss so many close in shots. I'm going to start using the Mikan Drill in practice but that involves only one player at a time.

In the past, it has been possible for players to dunk a basketball and pull the rim down so hard that the glass backboard shatters, either around the rim itself or, at times, shattering the entire backboard.

Once you get the ball, be strong and power it right back up to the hoop, usually off the glass. There is a good chance you will get fouled, and a good chance for an "old fashioned" three pointer... a put back with a free throw.

A coach or manager will throw the ball off the glass. Once one of the two players in the paint has control, the player on the foul line sprints back the opposite lane and faces the offense. The two players in the paint go on a 2 on 1 fast break.

The first play in the left group tosses the ball against the glass then moves quickly out of the way to the rear of his line as the second player in that line uses his left hand to tip the ball into the basket.

Individual Skill work every day if only for 5 minutes with your Bigs - Mikan, Tips off the glass, Superman Drill, Pogo.
With individual work consider requiring a ‘Second Effort' play after every shot.

Wood replaced the easily dented wire mesh backboards in 1904, and plate glass backboard usage was approved in 1909. Backboards were mounted flat against walls.
