Half court

Basketball HackingHalf Court Defense

Half court is a term used in basketball for a shot taken from half court (the middle line of the basketball court). It is most commonly used as a buzzer beater. It is also a streetball term where the teams only use half of the full court.

In the half court trap traps and defenders can get beat but with natural athletic ability and tenacious mentalities recover and perhaps deflect a pass or come from the weakside and block a shot.

This is a half court defense that looks to trap the ball when ever possible.
For this defense to work each player must understand the rules of dividing the court. The court is divided above the foul line and below and left side right side.

Give the ball to an offensive player at half court, 10-15 feet from the sideline. The offensive player with the ball tries to take his man one-on-one and score. The defensive player must steer the ball to the baseline and the help.

Half Court Shoot-Out Divide the team in half, form two lines at half court facing opposite baskets. Each person on each team must convert a layup, bank shot from outside the lane, a free throw and a three pointer, in no particular order.

Standing around dribbling the ball in a half court situation is cool; the pros do it. Standing around gives the defense a chance to rest, and takes away the offensive advantage, thus destroying the offense.

Ask coaches what is the toughest thing to defend in the half court. Many will reply containing the ball and handling dribble penetration.

Defending baseline penetration: Most half court man to man defenses in today's game try to influence the ball handler to the sideline when the ball is in the middle of the floor and towards the baseline when the ball is on the side.

Ball Handling Tip #4: This drill can go from baseline to half court. Step forward with your left leg and pass the ball from your right hand to your left under your left leg.

This defense can be used full court, three-quarter court, or half court. Players usually master this press faster than they will a zone press. Preseason practice drills and stressing of fundamentals are extremely important.
