Hand-Checking - Using the hands to check the progress of an offensive player when that player is in front of the defender who is using the hands. Holding - Restricting the movement of an opponent.

Hand-check: To make hand contact with a dribbler while guarding them.
This causes the defensive player to "hand-check" because he cannot control the offensive player for that extended period of time.
This shift is in part explained by hand-checking rules instituted by the NBA in 2007, which makes it a foul for a defender to use his hands to impede an offensive player.
