Basketball Hand checkingHand-Checking

Hand-Checking - Using the hands to check the progress of an offensive player when that player is in front of the defender who is using the hands.
Holding - Restricting the movement of an opponent.

Hand-checking: A foul that happens when a player uses his hands to obstruct another player's movement.
Hang Time: This is the amount of time a player can jump and stay in the air when shooting the ball.

Hand-Checking
A violation in which a defender uses his hand to impede a player's progress.
Hang Time ...

Hand-check: To make hand contact with a dribbler while guarding them.

This causes the defensive player to "hand-check" because he cannot control the offensive player for that extended period of time.

This shift is in part explained by hand-checking rules instituted by the NBA in 2007, which makes it a foul for a defender to use his hands to impede an offensive player.
