A jump ball is a method used to begin or resume play in basketball. It is similar to a face-off in ice hockey or ball-up in Australian rules football.

Jump Ball (or Tip-off) - Starts the game at center court. The referee tosses the ball up between the two centers who jump to tip it toward a teammate. A jump ball is also called when two opposing players have simultaneous possession of the ball.

Jump ball: When possession is unclear, the referee tosses ball in the air and one player on each team jumps and attempts to tip it toward a teammate.
Jump shot: A shot in which the player jumps and is in mid-air when he releases the ball.

Jump Ball - A jump ball starts every game and occurs when a referee tosses the ball into the air between two players from opposite teams.

A jump ball will be called two players withheld the ball from play for three to five seconds (depends).
If a player go to the floor for a looser ball, getting up is a travel. It's better to push the ball to a teammate or risk jumping ball.

alive: a ball is alive when it is released by a shooter or thrower, or legally tapped by a jumper during a jump ball; the game clock starts only when the ball becomes alive; compare with live.

The game is started with a jump ball in the center circle between two opponents.
A player is out of bounds when touching the floor on or outside the boundary line.

Notice little things like the initial jump ball alignment, special plays at the end of a quarter or half, and substitution patterns. Who throws the ball inbounds on each out of bounds play? Why?

Every game begins with a jump ball at the center of the court, in which a referee tosses the ball into the air, and one player from each team attempts to direct the ball to a teammate.

As already described, a jump ball starts only the first period of the game. The team gaining possession from the jump-ball will be deemed to have first possession.

Having a jump ball situation after every goal also slowed the game down considerably. Center jump still used today to start game and overtime periods. Alternating possession replaced jump balls in 1981.
