The Line Defense is a defensive strategy used in basketball. It is referred to as the "line defense" because of its formation on the court, which consists of two lines of defense.

 


The pack-line defense is a variation of man-to-man defense developed by Dick Bennett for the Washington State University Cougars. Something similar has been used by Tom Izzo at Michigan State and also Sean Miller of Xavier University.

The split-line is the imaginary line that runs down the center of the court, basket-to-basket.
The split-line defense is best taught with a shell drill so the players can understand the break-downs that follow.

One disadvantage to this approach is that the player defending the top of the key only plays on-ball and on-the-line, up-the-line defense when the ball swings around the perimeter.
