Lower percentage shot: A shot that goes in the basket with a low percentage. Lane: The painted area between the end line and the free-throw line near each basket, outside which players line up for free throws.

It is a lower percentage shot than the lay-up, and you avoid getting a foul, and you may get the rebound, or delay the offense long enough for your teammates to arrive on defense.
If you're shooting all perimeter shots without getting fouled, you're missing out on great opportunities. Shooting from the perimeter is widely thought of as a lower percentage shot, but behind the three-point arc, it's also worth more.
