Man-to-man defense is a type of defensive tactic used in American football, association football, and basketball in which each player is assigned to defend and follow the movements of a single player on offense.

 


Man-to-Man Defense - Force to the sideline and baseline.
We teach our on-ball defenders to force the ball toward the sideline and then down to the baseline.

Tight man-to-man basketball defense
This defense calls for one man to guard an opponent without ever leaving your assigned player or switching. Coach Branch McCracken used it against teams who didn't use a lot of screens and was quite successful.

The wheel man-to-man offense features constant movement. Cuts are made toward and away from the ball by every player with double screens away from the ball.

Man-to-Man defense is the most commonly played defense of basketball teams across the country. It's principles are simple. Each one of your five defenders matches up against one of the five opponents, and is assigned to guard him at all costs.

In our man-to-man defense -- What can we do to stop them? What needs to be taken away?

When facing a man-to-man press, you should clear the backcourt and let your point guard bring the ball up one-on-one. That's obviously sound advice.

If you want to become aggresive apply full court pressure using a 1-2-1-1 combined with man-to-man defense instead of your idea of a 1-3-1. Be careful using a 1-3-1, the role of the man up top requires foot speed and the heart of a lion.

Focus should be on quick defensive slides as they imagine they are pressuring their offensive opponent full-court man-to-man. Also, players should have their eyes up at all times, while digging for the ball with their hands.

THE FOLLOWING ARE SOME GENERAL TIPS FOR MAN-TO-MAN DEFENSE IN DIFFERENT SITUATIONS:
Ball-less Offender
Pardon my language, but I can't resist it. When your opponent does not have the ball, you should be doing the following.

Attacking zone defenses requires ball movement and total team effort compared to the player movement and individual skills required in attacking man-to-man defenses.

Defenders want to force opponents away from the basket and to prevent opponents from taking easy shots. There are two types of basic defensive team play: man-to-man defense, in which each player guards a specific opponent, and zone defense, ...
