Match-up zone defense is a type of defense used in the game of basketball. It is commonly referred to as a "combination" defense, as it combines certain aspects of man-to-man defense and zone defense.

 


An advantage of the match-up zone defense is that it may confuse the opponent in trying to figure out what defense you are actually playing. Also, it may dictate or affect the offense's basic set and get them out of their usual comfortable set.

THE MATCH-UP ZONE DEFENSE
The match-up zone defense attempts to shift into position to be able to defend each opponent man-for-man, and this shifting into position is referred to as "matching up".

Rules
All movements are a sprint.
1. Stop the ball.
2. Put pressure on the ball as much as possible when it is held, dribbled, passed, caught, or shot.
3. The closest man will always take the ball.

A new type of defense began to appear in the 1950's called a match-up zone defense. It was great at slowing an offense when properly executed, but difficult to teach.
