The defense is gambling that the pass can be picked off. Pass denial - If your man is one pass away, keep one body part in the passing lane. That means the defender is not "between his man and the basket". Rather, he is between his man and the ball.
Even so, you may not have impressed many coaches observing your play. So, what? You put in a few jumpers, a couple of lay-ups, picked off a few rebounds, and your man only scored nine. This doesn't necessarily mean you're good.
If O3 throws the pass over the top to the O1, this should be picked off by our inside helpside defender.
