Referees and officials
The main officials include one referee and one umpire.
The court is divided between them and they swap places after each foul involving a free throw penalty.

Referees
Referees make mistakes. It's part of the game. Captains should learn the ref's last name, put Mr. or Ms. before it when you speak to them, and watch things turn your way.

Referees govern play and call fouls against players by blowing a whistle and gesturing to signal the type of foul. Most fouls are personal fouls called on the defense for illegally contacting an opposing player.

Referee

Officials: The referees who rule the game, stop and start play, and impose penalties for violations and fouls.

In summation, since referees allow much more contact than usual when it comes to rebounding action, we stress strength and aggressiveness.

Most referees are good people who like and take an interest in kids just like you. And just like you, they want a fair game for both sides. Rarely, you may find a truly one-sided official.

Every game begins with a jump ball at the center of the court, in which a referee tosses the ball into the air, and one player from each team attempts to direct the ball to a teammate.

The referee tosses the ball vertically upwards between 2 opponents at the centre circle. The ball must be tipped (not caught) by one or both of the opponents, only after it reaches its highest point.

In the minor leagues in Europe you have to hope that the referee knows last years rule change.
I.e. the 3-second rule only starts when a player inside the court touches the ball and not when player 1 gets the ball from the referee.

Referees will call a foul against any player responsible for contact they consider could have been avoided - then they'll look at whether the contact was deliberate or not.

Whoever rebounds takes the ball out of bounds, hands it to another coach (acting as a referee), and is handed the ball back to inbound.

The defense can be moving and still draw a charge. If a player on defense has what referees call initial guarding position (both feet and the torso facing the opponent), he is in legal position to draw a charge if the offense slams into him.

No holding, tripping, hitting or pushing is allowed. Referees control the game. If a player commits more than five fouls, they are sent off the court for the remainder of the game.
