The rim has an inside diameter of 18". If you stand 9" forward of the
free throw line and do your usual free throw motion, your 13' 9" shot
will go past dead center and hit the back of the rim and rebound back
to
you.

The rim is actually about twice the diameter of a regulation basketball. In the NBA, the official ball is made of leather and has a circumference of 30 inches (76 cm) and a diameter of 9 inches (23 cm). Prior to play, the ball must be inflated to 7.

The circular metal rim attached to the “Backboard.' According to regulation, the basket should be 18 inches in diameter and suspended 10 feet above the ground. For obvious reasons, a successful shot through this circle is also called a basket.

basket: attached to the backboard, it consists of a metal rim 18" in diameter suspended 10' from the floor, from which a 15-18" corded net hangs, and through which points are scored; also used to refer to a successful field goal.

air ball An unblocked shot that fails to hit the rim or backboard. Does not reset the shot clock. air pass A pass that goes straight through the air to the receiver. See also bounce pass.

When not using the board, the shooter should aim just over the front of the rim. The advantage of this is that all rims are the same while backboards are different in each gym.

Because they have started with the ball in front of their face or obstructing vision, the natural reaction is to pull the head back to "peer" under the ball to see the rim.

Start about nine feet from the basket with your shooting hand facing the front of the rim while keeping your elbow in as far as your flexibility allows. Place your shooting hand is above your shoulder between your ear and shoulder.

The player made the first and then for his second attempt threw the ball baseball style at the rim attempting to get a long rebound. It was obvious to all that he had no intention to make the shot.

Place one rebounder at least 3 ft in front of rim. Place 2 players (one player on each side of basket). These 3 players will be in a triangle position in the paint. The shooter will shoot and move to the next position.

Rebound: (1) A missed shot that comes off the backboard or rim. (2) To fight for and gain control of a missed shot that comes off the backboard or rim.
Rejection: A blocked shot.

Fix your eyes on the front of the rim. Do not use the back of the rim, or, even worse, the white square on the backboard as your point of reference.

Station the other line directly underneath the rim. The kid underneath the rim rebounds the basketball and takes 2 hard dribbles up the center of the floor.

Personal preference determines whether the point selected is on the front or the back rim, but he/she should decide on one or the other and stick with that sighting point for all similar shots.

Air ball: A shot that misses the backboard & rim of the basket.
Alley-oop: A pass where the receiving player catches the ball in the air and shoots the ball without touching the ground.

When the ball hits the rim, find your guy and make contact! Obviously if he is way off from the rim, stay inside and wait for the rebound. Don't be afraid to make contact, but don't use your arms to push, use your body to advance.

WEAKSIDE HELP-"GET TO RIM"
We teach our players to "GET TO RIM" while giving weak side help. This means that x3 and x5 need to have one foot even on the imaginary line that separates ball and weak side.

Airball: a shot that entirely misses the backboard, rim and net.
Alive: ball is up for grabs when set in motion by a shooter and/or during a jump ball.

The regulation height above the ground for the rim (hoop) is 10 feet, and the rim is 18 inches in diameter. Backboards are 6 feet wide (72 inches) by 42 inches tall, with the inner square being 24 inches wide by 18 inches tall.

Backboard: The backboard is the "board" (which is made of a clear plastic) that is what the basketball rim is attached to. The board is 6 feet wide and 3 and 1/2 feet tall. It must be clear and flat.

It's hard to block this one because the rim provides you protection. Turn your head backwards and concentrate on the basket. Jump off the foot opposite your shooting hand.

Basket - Consists of the rim and the net.
Between-the-Legs-Dribble - A dribble through the legs from one to another.
Blocked Shot - Deflection of a shot by touching part of the ball on its way to the basket.

The imaginary "cylindrical" space directly above the rim of the basket. Under NBA rules, the ball cannot be touched when it is in the cylinder.

The feat of collecting ten or more of two statistical categories in one game.

Fake: An offensive player uses any part of the body, including the eyes, to deceive a defender. Pretending to shoot is called a pump fake.

Rebound - Securing the ball off the backboard or the rim after a missed field goal or free-throw attempt.
Reverse dribble - A dribble move used to change directions. Also called a spin dribble.

Fast break: A play that occurs when the offensive team quickly gets the ball ahead of the defensive team.

Swish: A successful shot that goes through the net without hitting the rim or backboard, making a "swish" like sound.
Technical Foul: Unsportsmanlike, non-contact and procedural violations.

Air Ball - Describes an outside shot that completely misses everything: the backboard, rim and net.
Backboard (or Glass) - The wooden or glass board on which the basket hangs. It is used for bank shots.

The outside players have to make one pass and get a shot off.If they do and they hit the shot,or the ball hits the rim or backboard,the defense runs a couple laps.
Switch inside / outside after a set period.

It is fifteen feet away from the backboard. On a free throw attempt, the shooter cannot step on or across this line until the ball strikes the rim. The free throw line is also used in defining the three second area.

Once he has taken the ball off the rim, have him pivot, and outlet the ball to the player waiting outside the three point line. This final action simulates what would be the beginning of a fastbreak in a real game.
