A quick sag to the basket with an aggressive movement greatly reduces the opponent's scoring opportunity. Diagram 3 shows the weak-side sag position. Notice how easy X1 could avoid a screen away from the ball.

Note:
X1 could sag to the level of the ball because her check is further away from the basket. However, she also does not want the attackers to reverse the ball to other side with a pass to O1.

On a perimeter pass, say from O1 at the point to O2 on the wing, D1 who was guarding O1 tightly when he had the ball must immediately sag back. Conversely, D2 who is guarding O2 in a sagged position must quickly close out.

Sag: A tactic in which a defender leaves their man or zone and drops into the lane to help protect the basket.
Sagging man-to-man defense: A conservative defense in which the defenders stay between their man and the basket.

Help-side basketball defenders must sag and zone. We want our help-side defenders two passes away to have at least one foot in the power zone when the ball is above the free throw line.

If you know that their O2 guard is their best shooter, then have X1 defend the point at first and allow X2 to sag toward their good shooter. And just the opposite applies if O3 is their best shooter.
