Salary cap: A salary cap is a maximum dollar amount teams can spend on player contracts. A salary cap is necessary to maintain competitive balance in the league.

Salary Cap -- The limit on the amount of the total money a team can pay its players. In the NBA, teams are allowed to exceed the cap in order to retain established “Franchise Players.
