Shooting guards must be able to score in various ways, especially late in a close game when defenses are tighter. They need to have a good free throw percentage too, to be reliable in close games and to discourage opposing players from fouling.

 


A shooting guard should maintain pressure on the perimeter, but also make offensive rebounds and have the ability to drive through anyone, even if they are double teamed.

Shooting guard: (1) A position played by a perimeter player who is usually the team's best outside shooter. Also called the "2." (2) The person playing this position.

Players #2, (shooting guard) and #3, (quick forward), fill the outside lanes and run the court within one foot of the sideline.

The shooting guard is generally a good ball handler with excellent shooting talents. The small forward is usually a strong scorer from both near the basket and at a distance. The power forward primarily concentrates on defense and rebounding.
