This drill goes way back to my days at the city pool in Ellwood City Pa. We used to play a game off the low board called jump-dive.

Set Shot Shooting Drills
There are as many types of set shots as there are basketball players.

Hook Shot Drills
Hook Shot Warm-Up
In this drill, you will shoot hook shots with both your strong and weak hands. Start with your head under the front of the rim, facing the sideline in a balanced stance.

This shot is used when you are standing still and close to the basket.
It is also the technique used for a free throw - an unopposed shot awarded after an opposing foul, and taken from the free-throw line.

The proper jump shot is shot with one hand, not two as it used to be back in the old days.

can be a pass or shot fake and then take a hard escape dribble to either side of the defender and get off a good jump shot. Repetition is the key.

Shot Clock — Operation
All rules agree that a team must attempt (release) a shot before the clock expires and that for it to be a legal attempt, the ball must strike the ring.

Shot Selection
When running the fast break, the offense should try to get: A) an uncontested layup B) an Uncontested short jump shot or C).an Uncontested 3 pt shot. If none of th ese are available, pull the ball out and set up your base offense.

Shot clock- this means in more aggressive ball that you have to get at least one shot off within the time they give you on the shot clock.

A 30-second clock (or 24 in the NBA) which limits the time a team may have possession of the ball without shooting. If a shot is not put up in this time then possession passes to the other team.

Shot Clock - Within a specified time from when a player inbounds the ball, a shot must be taken and the ball must touch at least the rim. Failure to do so results in a turnover.

Shot clock: a clock that limits the time a team with the ball has to shoot it; 24 seconds in the NBA; in college, 35 seconds for men, 30 seconds for women.
Shooter: a player who takes a shot at the basket.

Shot Clock: Each team, from the time they in-bound the ball has 24-seconds to shoot the ball. The shot must hit the rim or the clock runs out and they lose possession of the ball.

Jump shot: A shot in which the player jumps and is in mid-air when he releases the ball.
Lay-up: An easy, one-handed shot near the basket that bounces off the backboard and into the basket.

Bank shot -A SHOT that is aimed at the backboard so it "banks" into the BASKET. This shot is used when close to the basket and usually face on and not to the sides of the court.

Hook shot - a one-handed shot with the shooter facing sideways to the hoop and arcing the ball over the defending player to score.
Free throw - a free shot taken from the foul line as the result of a foul.

Since shot selection varies with the individual, we must get our players to understand what a good shot is for them. The tool of choice here is the shot chart. There are a variety of charts you can use.

The Shot - Your shooting action begins the moment you are in set position. Shooting is a one-piece action in which you quickly jump and uncock the wrist. This quick jumping action generates most of the power for the shot.

Blocked shot: When the defence deflects or stops a shot attempt with their hand while the ball is still on its upward flight.

Blocked Shot - When a defensive basketball player makes contact with the basketball while another player is shooting the ball.
Bounce pass - In this pass, the basketball bounces about two-thirds of the way from the passer to the receiver.

Shot Fakes
Before shooting while being guarded by a person that is taller than you, pump faking is a very good thing to do. A pump fake is also called a shot fake. Your opponent may jump up which leaves you free for a open shot or lay-up.

A segment of a basketball game. A National Basketball Association game consists of four 12-minute periods, or quarters. A college game is made up of two 20-minute halves.

Airball: a shot that entirely misses the backboard, rim and net.
Alive: ball is up for grabs when set in motion by a shooter and/or during a jump ball.

Shoot the Shot
Remember that old shooting game, "Around the World". Now, try adding a percentage to the game. Also, add two more spots, one at each "elbow". You will be shooting 5 shots from each spot.

Bernard King shot 51.7 percent from the field during his career and 58.8 percent in 1980-81. However, legal problems and alcohol abuse stopped him from becoming a star in the eyes of the fans.

Starting the shot with a flat or slight bent wrist helps a player in a natural way to have the correct hand and wrist position after the player has lifted the ball and thrusted it to the basket.

Bank shot: A shot that hits the backboard before hitting the rim or going through the net.
Baseball pass: A one-handed pass thrown like a baseball.
Baseline: The line that marks the playing boundary at each end of the court.

After taking the shot the players rebound the ball and give an outlet pass to the player without the ball.
The player receiving the ball from the outlet pass must wait behind the baseline until the ball is rebounded.

One, technique improves your shot by changing and focusing on the mechanics (movement) of the shot. You give little thought to the actual shot when working on technique.

Airball: An outside shot that misses the basketball hoop, backboard, everything. Airborne Shooter: An airborne shooter is a player who has released the ball on a try for a goal or has tapped the basketball and has not returned to the floor.

If an official inadvertently blows his whistle and the 24-second clock buzzer sounds while the ball is in the air, play shall be suspended and play resumed by a jump ball between any two opponents at the center circle, if the shot is unsuccessful.

This destroys the heart of the defense, and will most likely lead to a high-percentage shot on the other end. The 2-2-1 adheres to the same philosophy that the 2-3 zone does, in that players are responsible for given areas.
