RUN-AND-JUMP
In the State of Indiana, most coaches believe the first defense to be taught youngsters are an assigned man-to-man defense.

Switch on all hard screens. We believe that the open shot is what gets you beat, not the mismatch. The only screen that we will not switch on is ball-screens (pick-and-roll).

Switch: When teammates exchange defensive assignments during play.
Team fouls: each personal foul committed by a player is also counted against his team; when a team goes over the limit, its opponent is awarded free-throw opportunities.

Switch: When players change the person they are guarding on the other team while play is in progress.
Taking it to the Hole: Making a basket usually a dunk or a lay up.

Rule 6. Switch on screens.
See Diagram E. Switch screens on the perimeter. X1 and X2 will switch men (not zones) on the on-ball screen. X2 takes O1 and X1 gets O2.

Switch or Stay on Screens
I coach 5/6th grade boys and i tell them to fight thru all screens with a couple exceptions. One is cross screening in the lane. I have them communicate and switch on those.

A switch occurs when two defenders switch players they are guarding in order to give each of them better defensive position. As an example, the player you are guarding goes to the left.

Many times if I'm guarding someone bigger, or if I just got caught on a switch, I will actually avoid body to body contact. That's what a bigger player wants, body contact, because he can feel where you are, can control you with his strength.

Q: Isn't there an NCAA rule that after a made basket the team switching to defense is not allowed to interfere with the ball before it is inbounded by the other team and that after a warning a "T" shall be issued?

You can play continuously where the tagger switches or you can decalre a winner where when tagged the player is out of the game.

Turnover - When possession of the ball switches from one team to the other.
Zone Defense - A defensive setup in which players cover particular court areas, as opposed to covering man-to-man.

Cross-over - A simply a low, quick bounce in front that allows you to quickly switch momentum and direction.
Behind-the-back - You bring the ball behind your back to the side while the basketball bounces up.

With legs spread, hold the ball between legs with one hand in front and one hand reaching behind you, drop the ball and switch hands catching the ball before it hits the ground. Repeat as quickly as possible.

Pivot - The rotation of the body around one foot that is kept in a stationary position. Once a player has established his/her pivot foot, moving or switching the pivot foot is an illegal traveling violation.
