Technical fouls - procedural violations and misconduct that officials believe are detrimental to the game; penalized by a single free-throw opportunity to the non-offending team (two free throws and possession in college).

 


Technical fouls are handled slightly differently under international rules than under the rules used by the various competitions in the United States.

Technical Fouls
Also known as "T's." Basically unsportsmanlike conduct; this can include vociferous trash talking between players, but most often involves abusive and insulting language directed at the refs.

In some basketball programs too many technical fouls will cost you your coaching job. In all cases, technical fouls hurt your team, although your team may respond favorably afterward. Its a gamble.

Fines: There are fines in Basketball for technical fouls. An unsportsmanlike foul will cost a player $500 dollars. But it goes up from there.

Note: Most technical fouls on coaches are not team fouls. The team fouls are tallied up each half. If a team commits 7 team fouls in a half, that foul and any subsequent foul shall be penalised by free throws.

There are four personal fouls and two technical fouls and the referee will initially indicate which one it is.
The type of foul will then be signalled.

If a player or coach displays poor behavior, such as using profanity, referees can call technical fouls at their discretion. In the NBA, players and coaches are ejected after being called for two technical fouls.

You now have a running tally that shows who you want to have the ball at the end of the game or who you want to shoot technical fouls. You can also identify who shoots well in practice but not in games and vice versa.
