A three-point field goal is distinguished from a "three-point play", which occurs when a shooter successfully scores a two-point basket while being fouled, and then makes the ensuing free throw.

d. The three-point field goal area has parallel lines 3' from the sidelines, extending from the baseline, and an arc of 23'9" from the middle of the basket which intersects the parallel lines.

The league added the ABA's innovative three-point field goal beginning in 1979 to open up the game.
