A timeout in a basketball game serves many purposes. It primarily gives your team a chance to catch their breath, gain focus, and listen to the coach's instructions.

Timeout: Full timeouts are 100 seconds in the NBA, 75 seconds in college.
Transition: The shift from offense to defense. Teams slow in shifting are often victims of the fast break, above.
Trey: A 3-point basket.

Timeout - When play is temporarily suspended by an official or at the request of a team to discuss strategy or respond to an injured player.
Tip-Off - The initial jump ball that starts the game.

TIMEOUT......Plays are not designed to put the ball in the hole. Plays are designed to get you player open for a clean shot. Your player still has to make the basket in order to score. Alright, back to the offense.

A good referee always counts the players back onto the court after timeouts and at the start of each period. This would prevent any such incident arising.

Be sure that all players know how many timeouts are remaining and if they have a foul(s) to give. Players being alert to the timeout and team foul situations can make the difference in winning or losing.

You might choose to make the adjustment at a timeout; however, best results are obtained when the flex is automatic. The defense should also be aware of any change in the offensive position on the baseline and the free throw line.

We will use "13" out of timeouts to give the opponent a different look or if we want a quick trap. We usually do not use the "13" for extended periods of time.

Tips
Train them to shoot a three and follow their shot. Play clean on defense or you pay from the foul line.
