Basketball VerticalityViolations

A: It is a violation in my opinion. I will say, however, that if a player fumbles the ball and recovers it, I would judge the situation on its merit (and likely would not call a violation).

Violation
A violation of the rules covers such things as an illegal dribble or spending more than three seconds in the restricted area.
A foul is awarded with possession handed to the opposition.

Violations and Fouls

Lane Violation- is when the offensive team stays inside of their lane for more than 3 or 5 seconds depending on the level of the skill.
Five Foul Rule- this rule is so that you can only be aloud five fouls in a game.

There are two different 5 second violation calls in the books. One is applied when a team cannot pass the ball in-bounds within 5 seconds. This results in a loss of possesion.

There is confusion over the rules and what is legal and what constitutes a traveling violation. My interpretation is this...

Players commit fouls and violations; officials view those infractions, judge the action and then apply the rules of the game to what they have viewed. The rules then determine the penalty.
