Violation

Basketball Veteran Free AgentWalking

A: It is a violation in my opinion. I will say, however, that if a player fumbles the ball and recovers it, I would judge the situation on its merit (and likely would not call a violation).

Explain your traveling violation call to the player or coach if asked for clarification. It's not a good policy to ignore players or coaches while you are refereeing a game.

Violation
A violation of the rules covers such things as an illegal dribble or spending more than three seconds in the restricted area.

illegal dribble.

Violation: An infringement of the rules that's not a foul. The penalty for a violation is the awarding of the ball to the opponent.

Violation: see floor violation.
Weakside: the side of the court away from the ball.

Violation - An infraction of the rules that doesn't result in a free throw; however, the ball is turned over to the opposing team for a throw-in. Also known as a floor violation.

[edit] Violations
The ball may be advanced toward the basket by being shot, passed between players, thrown, tapped, rolled or dribbled (bouncing the ball while running).

Inbound Violation - Players have five seconds to inbound the ball. If unable to do so the ball goes to the other team.

Extreme violations as judged by the referee or gym supervisors, will result in immediate ejection from game and/or gym. Such violations include but are not limited to:
a. Fighting or threatening players, coaches, spectators, and administrators.

10-second violation - This refers to the rule that a team must advance the ball beyond the midcourt line within 10 seconds of taking possession of the ball. If it does not, the opposing team is awarded possession of the ball.

elbowing: it is a violation if a player vigorously or excessively swings his elbows, even if there is no contact; it is a foul if contact is made, and an automatic ejection if that contact is above shoulder level.

Inbounding - throwing the ball to a teammate from out of bounds; done after made baskets and violations
-27. Jump ball - an official tosses the ball up between two opposing players at mid-court to start the game
-28.

If the in-bounder hesitates on his pass-in, delaying for a few seconds, attack the near corner opponent aggressively to force a 5-second violation or a long hurried pass.

If an offensive ball handler while in the front court is closely guarded by the defense for five seconds, a violation is called and the defense is awarded the ball.
If two opponents are both firmly holding the ball a "jump ball" is called.

Anything else is a violation. The two players can take turns making the fastbreak dribble and being the traffic cop if a coach isn't present. A made jump shot is worth 2 point. A miss is 0 points.

There is confusion over the rules and what is legal and what constitutes a traveling violation. My interpretation is this...

Players hurry their shots, commit rule violations, and throw inaccurate passes. A basic game strategy on offence and defense is to play at a tempo that is beyond the capabilities of the opponent.

One-and-One or One-plus-One: a free-throw attempt awarded for certain violations that earns the shooter a 2nd attempt only if the first is successful

Illegal defense: A rather nebulous rule that is called irregularly. It's designed to prevent the use of the zone defense; it¹s more like a 3-second violation for the defense, in which no defender can stay in the lane for more than, well, ...

trapping right before halfcourt is good. You have the halfcourt line, the 2 defenders ,out of bounds line, and the clock working for you.By now we hope to have a 10 second violation on them

You then pick up the ball, take one or two more steps and gently bounce the ball against the square on the backboard before you take your third step (that would be a violation).

If you slide or change your pivot point after you have the ball, officials call a walking violation. Your team loses the ball.
Here is how to practice pivoting:
1. Start with the left foot as pivot foot.

It is very important that if you do dribble over, you must get to the depth of where the old 28-foot
hash marks used to be. If the ball is picked up here, you at least
have the option of passing backward without getting a back-court
violation.
