Since Bismuth Oxychloride is a byproduct of refining lead and/or copper, the reality is that it consists of microscopic pieces of metal that you force into the pores of your skin through the buffing technique in the application process.

"Mineral powders such as mica, titanium dioxide, bismuth oxychloride, and iron oxides are not dissolvable in water or oil," says Kevin Mendelson, a spokesman for Jane Iredale Skin Care Makeup, one of the pioneer mineral-makeup companies.

Some media reports have advised women to scan labels for bismuth oxychloride, the ingredient that gives makeup its pearly finish.

There are also other mineral makeup companies that claim to be better than the others, objecting sometimes to ingredients such as bismuth oxychloride. You have to always read the ingredient list.

It contains a combination of ingredients such as zinc oxide, titanium dioxide, bismuth oxychloride, iron oxides and others. These minerals are mixed with other inorganic pigments to get the right color.
