While some things that aggravate eczema - like winter weather - are certainly out of your control, you can avoid certain foods and skin irritants that provoke your eczema.

 


Irritant: A substance that consistently and predictably produces an adverse response (such as reddening, swelling, itching, burning, or blistering) in virtually all of the population. Irritants are not to be confused with allergens.

1. Irritant Contact Dermatitis
Irritant contact dermatitis is the most common skin reaction to a beauty product. It can result in burning, stinging, itching, and redness in the area where the product is applied.

Anti-irritant Substances that soothe the localized/superficial inflammation of the skin that is due directly to one or more external substances.

Counter-irritant: An agent which produces vaso-dilation of peripheral blood vessels by stimulating nerve-endings of the skin to generate irritation intended to relieve deep-seated pain.
Cramp: Sustained contraction of a muscle.

IRRITANT ECZEMA: This is most commonly seen in people who have repeatedly exposed themselves to harsh chemicals, cleaners, or soaps.

Anti-irritant: A substance or property that soothes inflamed skin.
Antimicrobial: A popular term for an agent that protects tissues from invasion by microorganisms or aids in the preservation of food and cosmetic products.

These irritants and allergens will just add up to the skin problem. Artificial preservatives are allergens too. However, there are products that utilize natural vitamin E as preservative which is safe to use.

my 18 year old son has developed a contact dermatitis (we think) out of the blue what could it be?

Contact Dermatitis occurs when your skin reacts to an irritant, such as a laundry soap you're allergic to. Red, itchy patches occur and can be treated by eliminating the substance that caused the irritation.
