Keratolytic: Topical agent that causes keratolysis (peeling of the stratum corneum). See Keratolytic Agents.

 


Salicylic acid is a keratolytic. It belongs to the same class of drugs as aspirin (salicylates). It works by increasing the amount of moisture in the skin and dissolving the substance that causes the skin cells to stick together.

To shed old skin cells, Kaufman suggests exfoliating with an over-the-counter or prescription keratolytic moisturizer, one containing lactic or salicylic acid.

Glycolic acid is the smallest molecule of the AHAs and as such, exhibits the most keratolytic ability. The effect is most evident in smoothing skin tones, improving areas of hyper pigmentation resulting from sun damage.

Salicylic Acid: Salicylic acid a beta hydroxy acid is a mild acid that works as a keratolytic agent (removes the tops layers of skin and opens clogged pores).

The freshly prepared extract is reported to enhance skin cell turnover, accompanied by a general improvement in the appearance of the skin, the very mild keratolytic effect smoothes out rough, tired, dry skin.
