Mast cells seem to have other roles as well. Because they gather together around wounds, mast cells may play a part in wound healing. For example, the typical itching you feel around a healing scab may be caused by histamine released by mast cells.
Mast cells have been found to have a role in the body’s immune system. They go to the area of the body where they are needed, and release chemicals such as cytokines, and histamines.
Mast Cell: Dermal cell which releases histamine and heparin (substances acting in response to a skin flare to redden the skin).
Topical mast cell-stabilizing solutions (eg, cromolyn sodium, lodoxamide) may offer a pharmacological alternative for these patients, although CL cessation is the most effective treatment.
Hives happen when the cells in the skin called mast cells release histamine, a chemical that causes tiny blood vessels (capillaries) to leak fluid. When this leaking fluid accumulates in the skin, it forms the swellings that we recognize as hives.
