Photosensitivity: A condition in which the application or ingestion of certain chemicals or foods can cause skin problems, such as rash, hyperpigmentation and swelling, when the skin is exposed to sunlight.

 


Photosensitivity: A condition in which skin has increased sensitivity to UV light. Photosensitive skin is more likely to burn, blister and may have an elevated risk of developing skin cancer with prolonged sun exposure.

It's easier to prevent any kind of sun-related reaction by taking care to cover up, wear liberal amounts of sunscreen, and avoid medications that have been shown to cause an increase in photosensitivity.

It can cause photosensitivity so be careful of applying to the skin prior to exposure to sunlight. It is generally considered mild enough for use with small children.

The use of some products that irritate the skin or cause skin photosensitivity can aggravate the problem. These products include cosmetics or fragrances containing alcohol.

Cornflower
Used in toners, astringents, and healing creams. Can cause photosensitivity in some people.
Cortex
Middle layer of an individual hair shaft in which the pigment of the hair is contained.

Ultraviolet light mutates proteins in the skin, which damages skin cells and causes a red, stinging reaction known as photosensitivity. To prevent it, King recommends wearing a physical block, rain or shine.

Possible side effects include inflammation of the lip and mucous membrane of the eye; dry mouth, nose, or skin; itching; nosebleeds; muscle aches; photosensitivity; and, rarely, decreased night vision.

ULTRAVIOLET A (UVA) RAYS
Sometimes referred to as "aging rays," these rays from the sun penetrate deeper into the skin than ultraviolet B rays and cause photosensitivity reactions.
