Tetracycline - An antibiotic used to treat acne. Also refers to a broad group of antibiotics used to treat acne.
Tetracyn - Trade name for tetracycline.
Topical - Applied to the skin, as opposed to taken by mouth (oral).

Tetracycline: First of the broad-spectrum antibiotics. Used in oral and topical forms as an acne treatment. It blocks the binding of aminoacyl tRNA to the ribosomes of certain bacterium.

Antibiotics: Tetracyclines, including Sumycin, Tetracyn, and Vibramycin (doxycycline). Sulfa drugs including Bactrim and Septra. Quinolones, including Cipro and Levaquin.

Stubborn back acne often requires oral prescription antibiotics such as tetracycline or minocycline. Acne on the back is much more resistant to treatment than facial acne, so you need to treat it aggressively.

A 3-month course of oral tetracycline (500 mg twice daily) is also helpful. Oral metronidazole (400 mg twice daily) or oral isotretinoin (0.5-1 mg/kg/day) is occasionally given in resistant cases.

More severe disease requires oral tetracycline in doses ranging from 250 to 1000 mg/d. Residual telangiectasia may respond to laser therapy.
