Urticaria pigmentosa is a rather uncommon disease that affects the skin. Affected areas show lesions, hives (if the lesions are rubbed) and intense itching.

Urticaria, also known as hives, can have many causes. You can get hives from food, from an insect bite or from soap. Hives can spread or remain local. Hives tend to appear as tiny, red, itchy bumps in a minor case.

Urticaria: A skin condition commonly known as hives. Raised white lumps surrounding a red area of inflammation.

Doctors can diagnose urticaria pigmentosa by seeing the characteristic lesions which are dark-brown and fixed. A small skin sample may help confirm the diagnosis.
