Actin filament

Biology ActinAction

Actin filament (AK-tin) Part of the cytoskeleton. Actin filaments contract or lengthen to give cells the flexibility to move and change shape. Together with myosin, actin filaments are responsible for muscle contraction.

Actin Filaments
Monomers of the protein actin polymerize to form long, thin fibers. These are about 8 nm in diameter and, being the thinnest of the cytoskeletal filaments, are also called microfilaments.

Actin Filaments (Microfilaments)
Actin filaments are long, thin fibers composed of 2 chains of protein wrapped around each other.
They occur in bundles or meshlike networks which provide mechanical support and determine the shape of the cell.

Main article: actin
Around 7 nm in diameter, this filament is composed of two intertwined actin chains.

Actin filament / thinner than myosin → lighter striations
Myosin filament / thicker than actin filament → darker striation ...

Actin filaments, shown in Figure 25, are long, thin fibers approximately seven nm in diameter. These filaments occur in bundles or meshlike networks. These filaments are polar, meaning there are differences between the ends of the strand.

Some Keywords...

This, along with the fact that all eukaryotic cells heavily depend upon the integrity of their actin filaments in order to be able to survive the many stresses they are faced with in their environment, ...

Optical trap A means of measuring the force exerted by a single myosin molecule on an actin filament. In this device, a laser beam is focused on a bead, which is attached to an actin filament.

Myosin heads attach to binding sites on the actin filaments. The myosin heads swivel toward the center of the sarcomere, detach and then reattach to the nearest active site of the actin filament.

troponin Complex of globular proteins positioned at intervals along the actin filament of skeletal muscle; thought to serve as a calcium-dependent switch in muscle contraction.
tropopause The boundary between the troposphere and the stratosphere.

A circular flow of cytoplasm, involving myosin and actin filaments, that speeds the distribution of materials within cells.
cytoskeleton ...

microvillus - thin cylindrical membrane-covered projection on the surface of an animal cell containing a core bundled of actin filaments. They are present especially large numbers on the absorptive surface of intestinal epithelial cells ...

A process leading to shortening and/or development of tension in muscle tissue. Muscle contraction occurs by a sliding filament mechanism whereby actin filaments slide inward among the myosin filaments.
