Adrenal glands
In mammals, the adrenal glands are the star-shaped endocrine glands that sit on top of the kidneys; their name indicates that position .

The Adrenal Glands
The adrenal glands are two small structures situated one atop each kidney.
Both in anatomy and in function, they consist of two distinct regions: ...

Adrenal Glands endocrine glands which are located on top of the kidneys and which secrete hormones such as cortisone and adrenaline (epinephrine)
(ad- = to‚ toward; renal = kidney) ...

The Adrenal Glands
Each kidney has an adrenal gland located above it. The adrenal gland is divided into an inner medulla and an outer cortex. The medulla synthesizes amine hormones, the cortex secretes steroid hormones.

adrenal glands Paired endocrine glands, located next to the kidneys in the abdomen. The adrenal cortex produces steroid hormones involved in water balance, glucose metabolism, and electrolyte balance.

aldosterone A hormone secreted by the adrenal glands that controls the reabsorption of sodium in the renal tubule of the nephron.
alleles Alternate forms of a gene.
allergens Antigens that provoke an allergic reaction.

In a fight-or-flight response, epinephrine released by the adrenal glands binds to a membrane receptor on muscle cells. Which of the following events result from ligand binding?
A.

Vitamin D production in skin
Sex hormone production in gonads and adrenal glands
Making cell membranes
Make bile acid (salts) ...

A band of cells along the border where the neural tube pinches off from the ectoderm; the cells migrate to various parts of the embryo and form the pigment cells in the skin, bones of the skull, the teeth, the adrenal glands, ...

This is usually a result of a change in the fetal adrenal glands, leading to production of abnormally high levels of androgens.

syndrome -- an autosomal dominant condition characterized by the anomalous growth and proliferation of blood vessels on the retina of the eye and the cerebellum of the brain; cysts and cancers in the kidneys, pancreas, and adrenal glands.
