Amnion

Biology Amino TerminusAmniotic fluid

Amnion
[Gr. amnion - the membrane around the fetus]. An extraembryonic membrane surrounding the embryo and containing the amniotic fluid which protects the embryo from shock and desiccation. It consists of ectoderm and somatic mesoderm.

Proamnion
[Gr. pro- - a prefix meaning before, in front of; Gr. amnion - the membrane around the fetus]. Region anterior to developing avian embryo, surrounding the head; contains only endoderm and ectoderm.

amnion
yolk sac
chorion, and
allantois
In birds and most reptiles, the embryo with its extraembryonic membranes develops within a shelled egg.

amnion
The innermost of four extraembryonic membranes; encloses a fluid-filled sac in which the embryo is suspended.
amniotic fluid
Watery-fluid that bathes the fetus keeping it suspended to act as a protective cushion.

amnion - the innermost membranous sac enclosing the embryo of an amniote; it becomes filled with amniotic fluid. One of the four amniote extraembryonic membranes; derived from the somatopleure (combination of ectoderm and somatic mesoderm) ...

amnion
(am-nee-on) [Gk. dim. of amnos, lamb]
The innermost of four extraembryonic membranes; encloses a fluid-filled sac in which the embryo is suspended.

amnion One of the extraembryonic membranes of the embryos of reptiles, birds, and mammals. The amnion encloses the embryo in a fluid-filled sac.
amniote lineage The evolutionary lineage of vertebrates leading to modern reptiles, birds, and mammals.

amnion The thin membrane that lines the fluid-filled sac in which the embryo develops in higher vertebrates, reptiles and birds.

Sharing the same amnion (or the same amnion and placenta) can cause complications in pregnancy. For example, the umbilical cords of monoamniotic twins can become entangled, reducing or interrupting the blood supply to the developing fetus.

Some parts of the blastocyst will form the extra embryonic membranes such as the amnion, chorion and parts of the placenta. The embryo forms on a plate-like layer of cells.

An egg that can be laid on land due to the presence of a fluid-filled amniotic sac (amnion) that cushions and protects the developing embryo. amniote - n.

higher vertebrate capable of terrestrial reproduction, and having an amnion during its development. Includes reptiles, birds and mammals.

The amnion, one of these extraembryonic membranes, creates a sac that fills with fluid and provides a watery environment in which the embryo develops. The embryo develops in a "pond within the shell".
