The four Recti (Fig. 889) arise from a fibrous ring (annulus tendineus communis) which surrounds the upper, medial, and lower margins of the optic foramen and encircles the optic nerve (Fig. 890).

Surrounding the inside of the pore is a nonmembranous material organized into an annulus that extends spoke-like structures toward the center of the small channel.

Unlike darkfield, however, this technique requires a specialized microscope objective that includes a "phase annulus" - a ring-shaped coating on one of the lens elements - that must match the incoming cone.
