(api = bee or apic = apex‚ summit‚ tip) ...

Phylum Apicomplexa
This group consists of parasitic organisms united by their possession of a unique apical complex of microtubules. Many of the organisms now placed in this group were classified in the old Phylum Sporozoa.

apicomplexa The protozoan phylum characterized by members having an apical complex used for penetrating host cells; cilia and flagella lacking, except in certain reproductive stages.

Sporozoans (Apicomplexa)
The members of this group share an "apical complex" of microtubules at one end of the cell (hence the name that many prefer to the old name of sporozoans). All the members of the phylum are parasites.

Malaria is caused by protozoan parasites of the genus Plasmodium (phylum Apicomplexa). In humans malaria is caused by P. falciparum, P. malariae, P. ovale, and P. vivax. P.
