Axon An axon, or "nerve fiber," is a long slender projection of a nerve cell, or "neuron," which conducts electrical impulses away from the neuron's cell body or soma.

axon a typically long outgrowth, or process, from a neuron that carries nerve impulses away from the cell body toward target cells. B Bacillus a bacterial cell that is rod-shaped (i.e. longer than it is wide).
axon (aks-on) [Gk. axon, axle] A typically long extension, or process, from a neuron that carries nerve impulses away from the cell body toward target cells.
axon - long nerve cell processes that is capable of rapidly conducting nerve impulses over long distances so as to deliver signals to other cells ...
axon A fiber that conducts a nerve impulse away from a neuron cell body. axon Elongate extension of a neuron that conducts impulses away from the cell body and toward the synaptic terminals.
The function of the axon hillock is described on another page [link to it].

An important pathway is thus formed between the cerebral cortex and the cerebellum, the first neuron having its cell body in the cortex and sending its axon through the internal capsule and cerebral peduncle to form synapses either by terminals or ...
The depolarization travels in one direction down the axon of the neuron to the opposite end of the cell. At the "far" end, the neuron has small vesicles containing a neurotransmitter which is released when the membrane depolarization occurs there.
Vesicle movement between organelles and the cell surface, frequently studied in the squid axon. Cytoplasmic streaming Movement of pigment vesicles for protective coloration Discharge of vesicle content for water regulation in protozoa ...
Be able to diagram a typical neuron and its three areas: dendrite, axon, and cell body. Know the characteristics of the various types of animal tissues.
Sensory neurons typically have a long dendrite and short axon, and carry messages from sensory receptors to the central nervous system.
Action potential The increase in membrane potential and the changes in sodium and potassium conductances that result from alterations in the permeability of the axon membrane to those ions. Also called nerve impulse.
A neuron consists of a body which contains the nucleus; dendrites, which are short branches off the body that receive incoming impulses; and a long axon which carries impulses away from the body and to the next neuron.
