Meiotic Breakpoints. Two groups reported algorithms concerned with defining meiotic breakpoints in the CEPH families.

Breakpoint
Refers to sites of breakage when chromosomes break (and recombine).

Chromosome
The term was proposed by Waldeyer (1888) for the individual threads within a cell nucleus (gk. chroma, colour; soma, body).

the breakpoint may occur within a gene creating a hybrid gene. This may be transcribed and translated into a protein with an N-terminal of one normal cell protein coupled to the C-terminal of another.

This allows chromosomes of otherwise equal size to be differentiated as well as to elucidate the breakpoints and constituent chromosomes involved in chromosome translocations.

Unequal crossing over A crossover in which the chromosomal segments exchanged are not equally sized because the breakpoint has occurred at a different place on each homologue.

gene conversions and deletions in the MHC-linked 21-hydroxylase gene (CYP21), gene conversions within the MHC class II genes in mice and humans, many oncogene translocations (BCL2 for example) are attributed to chi-like sequences at the breakpoint ...
