CAAT box

Biology C4 carbon fixationCaecum

CAAT box: A highly conserved DNA sequence found about 75 bp 5' to the site of transcription in eukaryotic genes. Its specific (trans-acting) transcription factor is CTF-1 (NF-1) (see also TATA / Goldberg-Hogness box).

CAAT box A component of many eukaryotic promoters with the consensus sequence 5'-GNCAATCT- 3'.

CAAT box
- A sequence located approximately 75 base-pairs upstream from eukaryotic transcription start sites. This sequence is one of those that enhance binding of RNA polymerase

Promoter regions (Normally less than a couple of hundred basepairs upstream of transcription) include elements such as the TATA and CAAT boxes, GC elements, etc.

Several promoters have a cAAT box around 90 with the consensus sequence 5' GGCCAATCT 3'. There is increasing evidence that all promoters for housekeeping genes contain multiple copies of a gC rich element that includes the sequence 5' GGGC 731 GG 3'.
