Catarrhini

Biology CatalaseCaudal

Catarrhini: One of the two divisions (suborder) of Primates containing the old world monkeys and apes (extinct and extant). The other division is Platyrrhini (new world monkeys).

The sense of smell is less-developed in the catarrhine primates (Catarrhini), and nonexistent in cetaceans, which compensate with a well-developed sense of taste. In some prosimians, such as the Red-bellied Lemur, scent glands occur atop the head.

It is less well developed in the catarrhine primates (Catarrhini), and nonexistent in cetaceans, who in compensation have a sensitive and well-developed sense of taste. The lack of olfaction is called anosmia.
