(Pars Cephalica S. Sympathici) The cephalic portion of the sympathetic system begins as the internal carotid nerve, which appears to be a direct prolongation of the superior cervical ganglion. It is soft in texture, and of a reddish color.

The neural tube closes early in embryogenesis and failure to close can result in a baby who is anencephalic (without a brain) or who has spina bifida (an opening somewhere along the spine). The child is paralyzed from the opening down.
The vertebrate body has two cavities: the thoracic, which contains the heart and lungs; and the abdominal, which contains digestive organs. The head, or cephalic region, contains four of the five senses as well as a brain encased in the bony skull.
