Chromista: A major taxon in the Kingdom Protoctista (also called Heterokonta). They are mostly photosynthetic algae but distinct from the rest of the algae.
In the first three of these groups (Chromista), the chloroplast has four membranes, retaining a nucleomorph in cryptomonads, and it now appears that they share a common pigmented ancestor.
fucoxanthin -- yellowish-brown pigment found in some members of the Chromista, including kelps and diatoms. glucose -- simple sugar, and the primary product of photosynthesis. It is polymerized to make cellulose and chitin.
In 21st-century systematics, however, most of the algae are classified in kingdoms such as Plantae and Chromista; and in such cases the remaining life forms are occasionally classified as a kingdom Protozoa.
