Ciliates

Biology ChymeCiliophora

Ciliates have:
at least one small, diploid (2n) micronucleus. It contains the entire genome but is not active in gene transcription.
a large, polyploid macronucleus that contains the active genes that run the cell.

Ciliates: This group of protists is most like animals in their behaviour and complexity. The Paramecium is the representative of the Ciliates.

Wikisource has the text of the 1911 Encyclopædia Britannica article Protozoa.

Ciliates are complex, heterotrophic protozoans that lack cell walls and use multiple small cilia for locomotion. To increase strength of the cell boundary, ciliates have a pellicle, a sort of tougher membrane that still allows them to change shape.

ciliates A group of protozoans that have cilia.
Ciliophora The protozoan phylum characterized by members with simple or compound cilia at some stage in their life history; heterotrophs with a well-developed cytostome and feeding organelles; ...

This is supported by a change van den Ende saw in the size distribution of the ciliates. At innoculation the ciliates showed a distribution of lengths ranging from 40 - 200 micrometers.

Except for the ciliates and water moulds, the traditional groups are polyphyletic and frequently overlap. Newer systems attempt to provide monophyletic groups based on ultrastructure, chemistry, and genetic features.

Though they look a bit like worms, these are ciliates that move with a gentle gliding motility.

Shows the slow deliberate movement of this ciliate, as well as the internal structure including the string of nuclei.

These include the amoebae, ciliates and flagellates. Some protozoa which cause human diseases are Giardia, which causes diarrhea; Trichomonas vaginalis which causes vaginal infections; Plasmodium which causes malaria; ...

macronucleus In ciliates, the large nucleus that carries up to several hundred copies of the genome and controls metabolism and asexual reproduction. PICTURE ...

trichocyst -- Organelle in ciliates and dinoflagellates which releases long filamentous proteins when the cell is disturbed. Used as a defense against would-be predators.

Examples: Diplomonads, Parabasalids, Euglenoids, Kinetoplastids, Ciliates, Dinoflagellates, Apicomplexans, Oomycetes, Diatoms, Brown algae, red algae, Chlorophyta, Plants, Fungi, Animals, Choanoflagellates

Includes but is not limited to: slime molds, water molds, all protozoans (ciliates(parameciums), zoomastigina, rhizopoda(amoebas), etc.) and plant like protists (clorophyta, golden algae, euglena, etc. ) ...

Mixoplankton. Planktonic organisms that can be classified at several trophic levels. For example, some ciliates can be photosynthetic but also can ingest other plankton and are heterotrophic.
